Singer-songwriter Elvis Blue ducked out of recording his new album to share his travel insights with us.
1. “Window, Middle, or Aisle?”
“I always choose the same seat, 33A on domestic flights. This gives me a great view of Jozi when travelling there, and a great view of the sea when traveling to the coast.
“It’s also apparently the safest seat. Studies show that sitting in the back is the safest place to be. Another benefit of this seat, is that there is no one behind you and you can recline your seat without all the guilt and shame… I feel it’s wrong to recline your seat in any other situation on a domestic flight.”
2. “What’s in your carry-on?”
“Headphones, a small notebook and pen, my iPad, my wallet.”
3. What’s your travel philosophy?
“The memories you make when travelling are usually worth much more than the expense of travelling. Being able to travel is a true privilege that you must appreciate, because actually very few people are able to experience this luxury.”
4. What’s your favourite travel hack?
“Online check-in and park-and-ride service at the airport.”
5. Where do you go to escape work?
“I go home and I try to jump in the sea every now and then for a nice surf.”
6. What’s your favourite family retreat?
“This must sound terrible and boring, but we like to be at home.”
7. What has been your most adventurous travel experience?
“I went on a surfing trip last year to Indonesia. It was just myself and a surfing buddy and we were really roughing it. It was far to get to this remote island in the Indian Ocean, but we loved every second.”
8. Who is your perfect holiday companion? And your nightmare companion?
“My wife. My nightmare companion would be a loud snorer who only showers intermittently and who is rude to airport and restaurant staff. Thankfully my wife is none of those things.”
9. What has been your most memorable holiday meal?
“It was a picnic with my kids. I can’t remember what we ate, but I had just been home from a long trip, and we went on a quick break for a few days and enjoyed a picnic together. Pure bliss.”
10. What do you miss most when you’re away?
“I really like my own shower. Sometimes when you travel you don’t know what you are going to get.”
11. What was the first trip you took as a child?
“Going to the sea with my parents and granparents, to Umthlanga rocks.”
12. What has travel taught you about yourself?
“I get very impatient when I am hungry, it think it’s called being “hangry”, I experience this every now and then.”
Elvis is currently recording his new album. His 9th studio album is scheduled to be out in May.
